An approved H-1B petition is not an entry document — you need the visa stamp in your passport. Here's the complete stamping process: fees, DS-160, dropbox eligibility, the document checklist consular officers actually ask for, and what happens if you get a 221(g).
1. Pay the visa fee (MRV fee)
Pay the $185 MRV (Machine Readable Visa) fee through the official portal for your country (ustraveldocs.com for India). Keep the receipt number — you need it to book appointments. Fee is valid for one year.
2. Complete Form DS-160
Fill the DS-160 online nonimmigrant visa application at ceac.state.gov. Upload a compliant photo, answer all questions accurately (they're checked against your petition), and print the confirmation page with barcode.
3. Check dropbox (interview waiver) eligibility
If you're renewing an H-1B visa that expired (or will expire) within 12 months, are applying in your country of nationality/residence, and have no prior refusals, you may qualify for dropbox — no consular interview needed.
4. Book your appointment(s)
Interview route: book both a biometrics (VAC/OFC) appointment and a consular interview. Dropbox route: book a single document drop-off slot. Slots in India fluctuate — check multiple consulates (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata).
5. Biometrics at the Visa Application Center
Fingerprints and photo at the VAC, at least one day before the interview. Bring passport, DS-160 confirmation, and appointment confirmation.
6. Attend the interview (or drop documents)
Bring: passport, DS-160 confirmation, appointment letter, I-797 approval notice, LCA copy, recent pay stubs, employment verification letter, and client letter if working at a client site. Most H-1B interviews last under 5 minutes.
7. Passport return
If approved, the passport with visa stamp is returned via courier/pickup in 3–7 business days. If you receive a 221(g) slip instead, the case goes into administrative processing — timeline varies from days to months.
