Dropbox (interview waiver) lets H-1B renewal applicants skip the consular interview entirely. But the eligibility window shrank from 48 months back to 12 months — and many applicants who qualified in 2023 no longer do. Here are the current rules.
Renewing a visa in the same classification
Your prior visa must be H-1B (same category you're applying for). First-time H-1B applicants do not qualify — interview required.
Prior visa expired (or expires) within 12 months
The 12-month rule replaced the temporary 48-month COVID-era window. Count from your prior H-1B visa's expiration date to your new application date.
Applying in your country of nationality or residence
Indians apply in India, etc. Third-country dropbox is generally not available.
Prior visa was not annotated 'Clearance Received'
If your last visa required extra administrative clearance, you must interview.
No prior visa refusals (that weren't overcome)
A past 214(b) or unresolved 221(g) refusal disqualifies dropbox — interview required.
Prior visa issued after age 14 (with fingerprints on file)
Your biometrics must already be in the system from the prior issuance.
✓ = requirement you must meet · ✗ = disqualifier to avoid. The official determination comes from the appointment system questionnaire — answer it accurately.
