H-4 stamping is usually straightforward — but the documents officers check are different from H-1B: marriage proof and the principal's current employment evidence. Here's the complete checklist, the questions asked, and the dropbox rules for dependents.
Stamping together with the H-1B spouse
Most common and simplest. Family books appointments together; the officer typically interviews the H-1B principal and asks the H-4 spouse only brief questions (marriage date, spouse's employer).
H-4 stamping separately (principal already in US)
The H-4 applicant attends alone. Carry the principal's current documents: I-797, visa stamp copy, recent pay stubs, employment letter. Officers verify the principal is maintaining status — stale pay stubs are the most common document gap.
H-4 dropbox eligibility
H-4 renewals qualify for dropbox under the same rules as H-1B: renewing same classification, prior visa expired within 12 months, applying in home country, no refusals. H-4 dropbox is commonly approved when the H-1B principal has a valid visa.
Child turning 21 (aging out)
H-4 status ends at 21 — a child cannot get H-4 stamping at or after their 21st birthday. Plan F-1 change of status or other options well before the birthday.
