Job Duties

The VDOT Northern Virginia (NOVA) District is welcoming applicants to apply for our Operator Maintenance / Transportation Operator II position within our NOVA Specialty Crew available in Fairfax County.

This position performs a combination of skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance, manual labor, and repair on specialized construction and maintenance assignments throughout the NOVA District. Equipment operation includes but is not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, tractors, pavers, rollers, and similar equipment. The incumbent performs various construction activities to include pipe installation/drainage work, paving, and concrete placement. All employees practice safety at all times and work as part of a team as well as independently.

VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

This position/crew works a 4-10 work schedule Monday through Thursday from 6am – 4:30pm year-round.

Required Skills:

Ability to maintain inventory records and complete simple paperwork.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs..
Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret work plans and specifications, and complete accurate work documentation.
Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
Ability to read and interpret plans and sketches.
Knowledge and application of work zone safety, traffic controls and flagging operations to include the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices
(MUTCD).

Ability to work on a team to complete work assignments.
Working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques.
Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies
and standards when operating CDL equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Licenses and certifications needed:

Commercial Driver’ License (CDL)
Basic Tree Cutting & Chainsaw Operator
Basic Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Training
CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course
Flagger

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge or experience in highway construction and maintenance equipment, materials, methods, practices, and procedures.
Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs.
Skill in preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
Skill in working with various types of construction materials to include asphalt and concrete.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools used for highway maintenance and repair.
Ability to work well as part of a team as well as independently.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
Ability to read and to follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers in a
professional manner.

Valid Driver’s License with ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT
and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.

Ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights,
weekends, and holidays.

Additional Considerations

Valid Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements or CDL permit preferred.
Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up.
Experience in performing roadway maintenance and construction activities.
Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
Possession of or ability to obtain certifications including Basic Work Zone, Flagging and DCR Responsible Land Disturber.
A combination of training, experience and/or education which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
