The Montpelier Area Headquarters located in Hanover County, is seeking experienced individuals to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/ attachments) and perform manual labor. As an Operator Maintenance, you will:
respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12-month tenure agreement is required.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs
Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods
Demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
Ability to obtain CDL within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
Ability to obtain a DOT medical card
Ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
Additional Considerations
Valid CDL or CLP
A combination of training, experience, or education in the trades or related field desired.
Experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation
Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up.

If selected as a finalist, you will perform a skills demonstration; undergo references and verification of work history, DMV Records Check, Pre-employment physical and drug screen, and Fingerprint-based criminal history records check. This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date at this and other locations within the Ashland Residency.
