The Academic Technology Services (ATS) unit’s major focus is to define a solid long-range vision and strategies for educational technologies at UC Davis, provide instructional technology support for faculty and students, and to coordinate campus and system-wide technology-related activities in teaching and learning. The Executive Director of Academic Technology is responsible for providing instructional technology support for faculty and students, and the coordination of campus and system-wide technology-related activities in teaching, learning and research. Working closely with the leadership of IET, and in coordination with the faculty community and stakeholders in the Academic Senate, the Office of Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, IT governance councils, the schools and colleges, the Center Educational Effectiveness, the Registrar’s Office, the Library, the Student Disability Center, UC Davis Extension, and campus academic support units, the Director provides campus-wide leadership on investments and priorities in support of our campus objectives for excellence in teaching, learning and research. In executing the duties described above, the Executive Director must have an understanding of current educational and research technologies, partnering with faculty to find solutions to their technology challenges in the classroom and online and have a strong grasp of the unique challenges associated with managing educational technology in a diverse academic environment, including factors related to classroom, hybrid and online learning spaces. The position will provide input to the AVP/ACIO of Academic Applications on the budgeting process and development of rate plans.

Job Summary
The Executive Director of Academic Technology is a key IT leadership position in the central IT organization supporting and reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost /Associate Chief Information Officer for Academic Applications. This position manages the Academic Technology Services units comprised of Teaching & Learning Technology Services and Instructional Media & Creative Services. Responsible for leading the development of a portfolio of technologies and services to support the instructional technology needs of faculty, students, and academic departments through the conceptualization, implementation and assessment of a roadmap and associated services for educational technology at UC Davis, both those used within the classroom and online, related to the learning management systems, video management systems, video production, student response systems, graphic design, and instructional design.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Extensive experience in the use of technology in instruction and research
- Experience managing or supervising creative and technical staff.
- Experience defining strategic directions, setting priorities and overseeing the implementation of new initiatives and business development programs.
- Experience developing programs that promote the effective, accessible and innovative use of technologies in discovery and learning.
- Experience exercising leadership and business management skills in a fast-paced, customer-centric environment.
- Experience to actively pursuing partnerships and work in close collaboration with a range of on- and off-campus groups, including the Academic Senate, faculty, students, campus service providers, the schools and colleges, and other partners.
- Interpersonal, written and public speaking skills to communicate complex academic technologies to audiences of all hierarchical and technical levels in an organization.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Advanced degree in education, business, learning theory, and/or instructional technology methods/principles.
- Experience managing and coordinating technical, business, and operational objectives with educational technology at a large university.
- Skills to monitor trends in higher education and identify technology appropriate for adoption.
- Skills to connect faculty with resources/tools for applying technology to instruction.
- Knowledge of universal design principles as they apply to teaching and learning environments, and to the development of fully inclusive courses and materials.
- Knowledge and understanding of university organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures, and experience working in a higher education environment.
- Knowledge of the university’s recharge/enterprise guidelines/funding models.
