VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its Construction section. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Construction Inspector vacancy. This position inspects all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects under the general supervision of senior or supervisory staff, ensuring construction quality in accordance with plans and specifications and providing a quality transportation system for the traveling public. This position may sit at the Saluda or Northern Neck Residency.

Note: The availability to work nights and weekends is required for this position. This role will report to either the Northern Neck or Saluda Residency location.

Certifications Required or Obtained within 12 months:

Asphalt Field Level I & II
DEQ: Inspector for Erosion Sediment Control (ESC IN)
Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety
Pavement Marking
American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Level I (CCWA)
Flagger
Guard Rail Installer Training (GRIT)
Soils & Aggregate Compaction Certification
Radiation Safety USDOT HAZMAT Certification (Nuclear Gauge)
DEQ: Inspector for Storm Water Management (SWM IN)

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra, geometry and trigonometry
Valid driver’s license
Skill in the use of computers and software applications
Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, inspection methods and materials testing
Safety shoes required
Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents
Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection
Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment
Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public

Additional Considerations

Completion of fall protection and confined space training
CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course
Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards and terminology
Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine minor adjustments to construction plans
Knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental, and equal employment opportunity guidelines and regulations as they relate to transportation construction projects
Experience in highway and bridge construction inspection with a DOT or consultant inspection firm
Proficient in AASHTOWare Project (AWP) or other project management software
Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection
A combination of training, experience, or education in engineering, drafting, or related field desired
