Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is seeking an Ferry Assistant Engineer at the Jamestown Scotland Ferry. As the Ferry Assistant Engineer, you will Operate and monitor main engine and auxiliary machinery on ferry vessels to ensure safety of passengers, crew and property. Safety VDOT employees are expected to routinely demonstrate safety behaviors as well as advocate and practice safety in everyday work activities. Manages area(s) of responsibility to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. Demonstrates and routinely practices safety behaviors as a condition of employment. Reports all safety accidents, incidents and/or concerns appropriately and in a timely manner. Essential Emergency Operations As defined by VDOT Department Memorandum (DM) Number: 17-1 – Emergency Operations and Traffic Management, VDOT is an emergency operation agency. As such, this job is essential to emergency response operations and expected to work in these situations. Report to work when called. Maintain communications with supervisor. Keep abreast of weather forecasts for duty readiness in reporting. Be prepared to operate appropriate equipment in all kinds of weather. Record Keeping Maintain ship’s engineering log with all pertinent information. Maintain records of machinery usage and readings for maintenance department. Maintain and submit all other records and reports on schedule. Vessel Machinery Management Assist Chief Engineer in operating all machinery according to USCG and VDOT regulations and policies and recognized engineering practices. Perform all required drills and crew training. Maintain vessel readiness for USCG inspections. Ensure accurate fuel readings are taken and recorded at the start of each day. Perform minor repairs to all primary engines, generators, etc., and ancillary system i.e. toilets, etc. Perform other duties as assigned to maintain the safety, cleanliness and overall operation of the ferry and facility. Vessel Security and Emergency Response Be alert to security violations and suspicious behavior during shift and report to supervisor as soon as possible. Ensure engine room security doors are closed and secure at all times, as well as other non-passenger access compartments. Respond to emergencies to include fires, floods and man overboard in appropriate manner. Operate vessel as per COI with and without passengers onboard. Clean assigned areas and empty trash. Serve as Emergency Helmsman and crew member on deck when required. Other duties as directed to meet the needs of the ferry. Passenger Management Provide information and assistance. Resolve issues with passengers in a professional manner.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to read and interpret gauges, schematics, and manuals. Ability to complete and maintain records and reports.
Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
Valid driver’s license.
Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).
Knowledge of United States Coast Guard regulations governing ferry operations.
Ability to obtain and maintain CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course.
Knowledge and ability to operate and monitor main engines and auxiliary machinery on ferry vessels.
Ability to train others.
Ability to diagnose and repair primary and ancillary systems on ferry.
Ability to obtain and maintain required certificaitons and licenses within designated period.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Must hold a minimum MMC – endorsed as Assistant Engineer of Motor Vessels of at least 3000 H.P.
Additional Considerations
High school diploma or GED desired.
Experience maintaining machinery on motor vessels.
