Overview:
We are hiring a Team Lead for KDI (Knowledge Discovery Infrastructure)! The KDI Team focuses on supporting our researchers’ IT needs to provide world-changing science impacting humanity, including our veterans. Our goal is to enable research while protecting ORNL assets, especially from cyber incidents. This position resides in the Support Services & Isolated Environments group of the Research Computing division of the Information Technology Services Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, much of your time will be devoted to directing a team of systems engineers. The remainder of your time will be focusing on the oversight of technical projects/operations supporting customers/projects directly.
What will you be doing?
Collaborating with other ITSD Team Leads, you will supply a variety of IT services to research, such as Infrastructure, HPC Engineering, Software and User Support, Dedicated Program Support, Data Management and Engineering Expertise, Consultative Services, etc. You will direct a team dedicated to providing PHI, PII, and enhanced data protection support within KDI for special research programs, requiring an understanding of data sensitivity and enhanced security, management of dedicated IT teams representing the entire stack of services from the user onboarding to hardware delivery, communication with programs, and a strong capability to work directly with staff to achieve work product.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Staff management activities include:
Hire, develop, and coach staff to ensure project and team success.
Performance management, including creation of yearly performance and development plans, and year-end assessments.
Routine meetings with staff to understand current projects and assist with removing roadblocks (may require escalation).
Time and attendance oversight and approval.
Develop and manage training plan and budget.
Develop business relationships with customers of KDI, understanding their business and where IT could provide services.
Ensure compliance with NIST 800-53 moderate confidentiality, HIPAA, and other protected data requirements.
Provide reports as requested, such as major accomplishments or staffing per project.
Project management of informal to formal projects ensuring on-time, on-scope, and on-budget delivery.
Individual Contributor / Technical Tasks:
Team Leads in the Research Computing Support Division contribute to the Division, Group, and Team’s business continuity by engaging in cross-training with other Team Leads. Cross-training activities could include any of the following:
Design, install, configure, secure, and maintain Windows or Linux systems, VMware clusters, and application software in support of project needs. Provide consulting in the selection and purchase of hardware and software systems.
Manage backup services.
Ensure configuration management utilizing tools such as Ansible.
Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.
Monitor for system issues.
Troubleshoot system problems quickly and effectively.
Work with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.
Answer user calls related to primary project work.
Develop and document system and service diagrams, procedures, and software build/install notes.

Basic Qualifications:
A BS degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, business, technology, science, or a related field of study and eight (8) to twelve (12) years of aligned experience is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent experience may be considered.
Four (4) to five (5) years of management experience, including training and mentoring groups and individuals in complex technical environments.
Experience managing technical projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience training and mentoring groups and individuals in complex technical environments.
In-depth understanding of NIST 800-53 moderate confidentiality and HIPAA and other protected data requirements.
Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for communication with customers and management.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to lead (projects, teams, etc.)

This position requires the ability to acquire and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
