Job Description
Serve as a member of the Marine Program responsible for assisting in the planning and implementing various ongoing fisheries projects. The Educator will be responsible for delivering marine educational programs that address local, regional, and statewide programming priorities, emphasizing fisheries demonstration research programming initiatives and the fishing industry and community members’ education on the importance of fisheries research. Promoting program objectives and plans, emphasizing field applied research projects, processing and reporting commercial and recreational fisheries data, educating the fishing industry and community members on fisheries research’s importance, and delivering fisheries programs in Suffolk County. This individual represents Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Marine Program to the public, community leaders, government officials, and Cornell University as part of program delivery. Several state and federal grants fund this position. The Technician will work as a team member with existing Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) staff, including fisheries specialists, educators, and technicians. Will receive direction and guidance on daily work activities from Supervisor and Association Subject Educator, as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree or equivalents of two years of transferrable program/functional experience.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. unassisted.
- Must be able to meet travel demands associated with this position.
- Must be able to report to various locations to start the workday.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, evenings, and weekends.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to go to sea for various periods.
- Ability to communicate daily activities, program progress, and production to Supervisor.
- Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional tools and methods and electronic technology (e.g., video, audio, computers, etc.).
- Detail-oriented.
- Ability to follow procedures and written instructions.
- Must demonstrate high integrity, sound professional judgment, and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
- Proficient with windows-based software, including the internet and Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in marine science, natural science, environmental science, and a basic understanding of marine science.
- Experience with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organizations.
- Experience in fisheries and fisheries management.
- Experience in marine education and community outreach.
- Experience with and knowledge of commercial fishing gear.
- Ability to accurately identify local fish species and be familiar with local fisheries.
- Ability to work alone with little supervision.
- Ability to organize reference materials for retrieval by others and be willing to learn new subject matter.
Experience conducting dockside and at-sea research education demonstration program delivery on commercial fishing vessels.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Program Responsibilities:
Program Delivery – 75%
- Deliver marine educational programs that address local, regional, and statewide programming priorities, emphasizing fisheries demonstration research programming initiatives and the fishing industry and community members’ education on the importance of fisheries research.
- To deliver the program, utilize various educational methods, including on-board teaching, group experiences, media, newsletters, electronic technology, the internet, and distance learning.
- Foster acceptance of the program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.
- Provide educational program efforts to the fishing industry and fisheries managers via mass media, including contributing articles to Fisheries publications, utilizing e-mails, phone calls, and website postings.
- Interact with program participants to provide programming and support- professionally always representing CCE.
- Represent CCE professionally before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities as part of program delivery.
- Provide program education, outreach, and information in various locations at fisheries council meetings, fisheries workshops, and training.
- Maintain and prepare materials necessary for the Marine program by applying existing subject matter knowledge.
- Assist in-field support and coordination of demonstration research projects.
Program Evaluation – 5%
- Assist in analyzing collected program evaluation data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policies, procedures, and methods.
- Interact with program participants, Association staff, program committees, county/community leaders, and other key stakeholders to collect evaluation data for improving programs.
- May assist in designing the program evaluation framework and recommending program changes to strengthen and improve programs.
- Communicate evaluation results and findings.
Applied Research – 10%
- Assist in conducting applied fisheries research, including at-sea and dockside field activities requiring the ability to identify and lift specimens to and from scales.
- Collect and process samples and data.
- Communicate all applied research activities to Supervisor.
- Assist in maintaining a direct linkage with Cornell University faculty for guidance in applied research.
- Assist in coordination and interaction with fishing industry cooperative research partners.
- Assist in-field support and coordination of demonstration research projects.
Administrative Responsibilities:
Coordination/Operation – 5%
- Maintain communication with constituents and the community through various methods such as newsletters, phone calls, e-mails, electronic technology, the internet, social media, website postings, and content.
- Assist with coordination of marketing and promotion of the Marine program through public relations initiatives and networking/collaborating with government, economic, educational, and other organizations.
- Provide information as directed by Supervisor regarding preparing and presenting reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others, as necessary.
- Prepare materials for grant/contract proposal submission.
- Maintain high self-motivation and self-management, including time management and scheduling to achieve maximum productivity.
- Provide technical support for equipment maintenance.
- Assist in coordination and interaction with fishing industry cooperative research partners.
Professional Improvement – 5%
- In cooperation with Supervisor and Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
- Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions
- Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
- Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.

POSITION DETAILS:
Salary: $17.00 per hour
Schedule: non-exempt 40 hours per week
