As an Engineer Structure and Bridge, you will use our foundational drivers to play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia. This opportunity is based at our Richmond District office where you will have incredible natural resources like; the James River and the many trails, historical sites, and cultural activities to help you balance work and personal life. The district is responsible for approximately 18,000 miles of road in Central Virginia, making it VDOT’s largest district roadway. This hourly/wage position is not entitled to the State’s benefits package or Virginia Personnel Act (VPA) protections. Incumbents hired into hourly/wage positions are limited to working an average of 29 hours per week and 1,500 hours in a 12-month period. VDOT is seeking an engineer to design and detail structures and bridges for new construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects for the Richmond District. You will check statically determinate and indeterminate structures of concrete and steel to meet alignment, dimension, strength and economic requirements using AASHTO specifications to prepare plans; compute dimensions and quantities of materials; provide construction support and direction regarding construction and maintenance of structures and bridges; and effectively manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion and review plans prepared by others to ensure correctness. Successful candidate will prepare effective preliminary and final bridge and structure designs for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects, ensuring compliance with AASHTO and VDOT specifications; prepare bridge plans, sketches, and structural drawings; check structural plans prepared by others to ensure accuracy and completeness; investigate condition of existing structures and assist in developing scope of proposed bridge rehabilitations; analyze structures for safe load carrying capacity and perform structural calculations to ensure soundness and compliance of structural elements. You will provide technical guidance and support related to bridge construction activities, issues, and problems; participate in meetings to ensure bridge-related issues are presented; coordinate design activities with other sections, divisions and consultants; monitor project development and design schedule and maintain project records and correspondence; oversee project activities to meet project requirements; perform review of bridge construction records for final payment to contractor; and attend project meetings to give and receive updates on project progress. This job also entails some field work: inspect or assist in inspecting bridges to determine repair types and quantities, investigate causes of deterioration, or make field measurements pertinent to bridge design or rehabilitation. Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices related to structural engineering to include strength of materials, statics and structural analysis; of structural steel design, reinforced and pre-stressed concrete design and soil mechanics; and of specifications, codes and regulations related to structural design (e.g. AASHTO and LRFD structural design standards). Ability to estimate quantities and costs of materials; to interpret construction plans and design specifications; to produce structural design plans and notes; to review and administer consultant design contracts; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to draw rational conclusions and develop solutions from analysis and make independent decisions and manage multiple assignments. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse groups. Ability to read and understand highway construction plans. Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include MS Office, project management and engineering software programs. Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to customers.
Additional Considerations
A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field desired. Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer’s (PE) licensed desired. Skilled in AASHTO’s Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications desired.
