This is a position within the Aftertreatment Performance and On-Board Diagnostics group. The responsibilities of this group are to design and develop the catalyst kit as well as the aftertreatment controls and diagnostics. These responsibilities include meeting regulatory requirements contained within emissions and on-board diagnostics (OBD) legislation while balancing a broad spectrum of boundary conditions in varying environments and vehicle duty cycles.
The person in this role will lead the design and development of complex OBD powertrain components and systems by applying engineering principles that set the industry benchmark for performance, fuel efficiency, cost, reliability and safety. This person in this role will also lead the TT/XNP organization to optimize programmatic activities and tracking.

- Understand and interpret emissions and OBD regulations in context of how the requirements will be fulfilled by Detroit engines and aftertreatments sold in the U.S. and abroad
- Effectively collaborate within a cross-functional team to ensure the various requirements and boundary conditions are fully understood and maintained
- Regularly prioritize workload, clearly communicate progress and elevate roadblocks to the team and management
- Assess aftertreatment performance and emissions margin by reviewing data gathered in performance test cells, durability, engineering vehicles and the reliability growth fleet
- Globally design ATS diagnostic strategies
- Demonstrated collaboration and leadership w/ Stuttgart.
- Expert in Simulink, Modeling and Off-Line Analysis
- Globally align controls/diagnostics and calibration philosophies.
- Solid physical and chemical comprehension of DOC, DPF and SCR physics.
- Ability to translate actual physics into a model and vice versa.
- Invent and implement strategies to meet future OBD requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with global engineers.
- Knowledge of engine development: key operating characteristics, basic validation approaches, calibration/control approaches, terminology, etc.
- Comprehension of emissions regulations and ability to address impacted systems.
- Able to discuss technical concepts and rationalize the downstream impacts to a production plant, customer, service, etc…
- Understanding of applications and OEM specific impacts to controls and calibration development.
- Lead the global development, verification, and validation of powertrain components, controls, and systems.
- Analyze and provide creative, technically-feasible solutions to problems encountered in validation and production.
- Create and manage project plans, timelines, and propose budget requirements to management.
- Monitors work progress, issues work orders, and resolves problems in order to ensure timely completion of projects, scheduling time according to plans.
- Mentors engineers within the project scope.
- Regular communication of work status to management, identifying project issues, delays and risks.
- Conduct and thoroughly document project work, draw conclusions, and make recommendations that are reviewed with management.
- Define and release new or improved products and follows the release through scheduling, procurement, manufacture, assembly and test.
- Generate and implement ideas to continuously improve work environment, systems, tools, processes as well as product cost and quality.
- Improve competitive market position by keeping abreast of state of the art developments in the powertrain components and systems industry and applying the new knowledge to designs.
- Promptly resolve plant build issues and field problems.
- Lead cross functional activities with suppliers, Purchasing, Sales, Materials, Manufacturing, Quality, Warranty, Marketing, and other departments in the product development and testing phases.
- Ability to communicate and maintain professional and social interaction in a multi-cultural environment.
- Improve knowledge and skills through training; actively identify areas of potential self improvement and alert management of opportunities for training.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field
- Routinely makes decisions impacting others with minimal involvement from management
- Experience developing and integrating diesel engine and aftertreatment On-Board Diagnostic monitors
- Fundamental understanding of Diesel Engine and Aftertreatment Operation
- Experience identifying and solving the root cause of complex problems
- Experience applying relevant Engineering concepts and tools
- Fluid ability for use of standard control architecture tools, such as Matlab & Simulink
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team as well as being able to execute independently
- Familiarity with OBD development
- Familiarity with controls theory
- 5-7 years of relevant experience or 8 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree
- Advanced degree in aftertreatment, engines or controls
- Profound knowledge of thermodynamics and chemistry
- Proficiency in German Language is a plus
