This is a full-time, tenure track position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, beginning in August 2023. We are seeking a candidate with significant expertise in data science, both to complement existing faculty expertise across the mathematical sciences and to develop new programming in data science. The successful candidate will teach courses in data science and statistics at the undergraduate and masters level, provide vision and leadership for our minors in Statistics and Data Science, and take a leadership role in developing new programs. A priority would be development of an online professional masters program in data science. Data science is a highly interdisciplinary field, and the successful candidate would work with faculty in other departments and stakeholders outside the institution to develop programs, curriculum, and experiential learning opportunities, according to relevant curricular guidelines, industry standards and expectations, and pedagogical best practices. A successful candidate should expect departmental and institutional support, including potentially the opportunity for consultation with other experts and/or a course release in each of the first two semesters. A successful candidate would meet departmental and institutional expectations for teaching, service (including advising and recruitment), and scholarship.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Chair, the successful candidate will:
Teach courses in data science and statistics at the undergraduate and masters level and for general education, both in person and online;
Coordinate data science and statistics offerings, including maintenance of the minors in Statistics and Data Science;
Take a leadership role in developing curriculum for new academic programs in data science, in cooperation with faculty from multiple disciplines;
Provide departmental and institutional service, including advising and recruitment
Contribute to curriculum development and refinement;
Provide academic advisement to students;
Participate in committees and provide service to the department, college, university, and profession;
Be aware of, understand, and follow all university policies.

Job Requirements:
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at SUNY Fredonia offers degree programs in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Mathematics Education, as well as minors in Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, and Applied Mathematics, and a Masters in Mathematics Education. In addition, we offer advisement and coursework for actuarial science. We are seeking to strengthen and expand our programming and coursework in data science, including online offerings, and the successful candidate will take a leadership role in this exciting endeavor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

PhD in Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or Mathematics, or closely related field, required;
Strong computer programming skills, including fluency in R and/or Python;
Demonstrated interest and ability to teach courses in data science and statistics at the undergraduate and masters level and for general education, including expertise in the theoretical, computational, logistical, and ethical aspects of data acquisition and management;
Commitment to a high standard of teaching in a comprehensive public university setting;
Vision for a vibrant program of scholarship, including potential for involving students in research and for engaging in interdisciplinary research and curriculum development with faculty in other departments;
Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and constituents in support of campus and department mission;
Experience with instructional technology;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Teaching experience at the college level and/or professional experience outside of academia;
Familiarity with industry standards and expectations in one or more employment sectors;
Familiarity with curriculum and best practices in data science education;
Experience with supervising or developing student internships;
Interest in, and commitment to, community engagement.
