Taste NY highlights the quality, diversity, and economic impact of food and beverages grown, produced, or processed in New York State. The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia & Greene Counties Capital Region Welcome Center Taste NY Market (the “Market”) promotes the region’s local tourism industry, rich history, food and beverages. The Market showcases a broad selection of fresh made breakfast and lunch items, including soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts using ingredients sourced from Capital Region growers and producers. It also offers grab-and-go snacks and specialty local gift items for sale. The Market is a partnership between CCE of Columbia and Greene Counties, Cornell University, NYS Agriculture and Markets and the NYS Empire State Development Corporation.
Taste NY Market Store Associate responsibilities include assisting with management of inventory, operation of cash register, cash controls, transportation of inventory to the store, customer service, food service and record keeping. Helps to keep the store visually distinctive and impeccably maintained – cleaning, preparing product demonstrations, restocking, refilling supplies, etc. Associates also discuss NYS agriculture and local foods with customers to engage them in these areas and to provide information upon request about the food and farm products sold in the store.

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Ability to effectively work in an informal, educational-based retail environment, ensuring positive public educational and customer service experiences.

Communication Skills – Ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and tactfully through verbal, written and electronic methods. Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.

This position works constantly in a retail setting – ability to maneuver around the sales floor, stockroom, and office, ability to operate point of sale register, office computer, and other equipment. This position frequently lifts, moves and/or transports Market products, supplies and equipment (typically 20-50 lbs.).

One (1) year retail sales experience.

Experience working in customer service and retail environments.

Understanding of basic marketing.

Ability to handle multiple tasks.

Proficiency with internet based communications.

Knowledge of the organization, operation, philosophy and objectives of Cooperative Extension.

Knowledge of agriculture and agricultural practices.

Provides customer service – greets, assists and serves the needs of Taste NY store customers. Describe the local farms, produce, food and products displayed.

Prepares and serves fresh made breakfast and lunch items, including soups, salads, sandwiches, desserts and hot and cold beverages.

Cleans and prepares food prep areas.
-
Operates point of sale cash register, makes change, etc. Cash Controls – follow all procedures for proper management and handling of cash.

Stock and replenish store supplies and inventory. Track product inventory.
-
Prepares product and food demonstrations.
-
Assist in cleaning and maintaining a visually distinctive and impeccably maintained store.

Assist with store opening and closing procedures.
-
Quickly notifies supervisors of any unique or emergency situations.
-
Assist with store inspection, organization and recordkeeping.
-
Receive and log scheduled deliveries.
-
Assist with promotion of agri-tourism in Columbia & Greene Counties.
-
Maintain equipment, troubleshoot if necessary and call for repair as directed.
-
Frequently lift, move and/or transport Market products, supplies, and equipment.
-
Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures.

In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
