Job Duties
This hourly/wage position is not entitled to the State’s benefits package. Positions filled through this recruitment are limited to an average of 29 hours per week and 1,500 hours in a 12-month period. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is seeking a qualified Highway Maintenance Laborers to fill vacancies located at the Accomac Area Headquarters. This position performs a combination of skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks to maintain Virginia’s roadways. Safety VDOT employees are expected to routinely demonstrate safety behaviors as well as advocate and practice safety in everyday work activities. Manages area(s) of responsibility to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. Demonstrates and routinely practices safety behaviors as a condition of employment. Reports all safety accidents, incidents and/or concerns appropriately and in a timely manner. Essential Emergency Operations As defined by VDOT Department Memorandum (DM) Number: 17-1 – Emergency Operations and Traffic Management, VDOT is an emergency operation agency. As such, this job is essential to emergency response operations and expected to work in these situations. Report to work when called. Maintain communications with supervisor. Keep abreast of weather forecasts for duty readiness in reporting. Be prepared to operate appropriate equipment in all kinds of weather. Job Safety Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Identify workplace hazards and make suggestions for improvements to ensure workplace safety. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA , VOSHA, etc.). Use equipment properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices. Preventative Maintenance Perform maintenance repair, replacement, preventative maintenance and manual labor. Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated. Emergency Operations Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction activities. Manual Labor Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. Perform manual labor and other maintenance tasks as needed for project completion.
Minimum Qualifications

Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

Skill in the operation, maintenance of light and medium equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Skill in the operation, maintenance of hand-held and power tools.

Ability to read, follow oral and written instructions.

Additional Considerations

Experience in equipment operation and performing preventive maintenance.

A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Construction or related field.

Experience with emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up.

Experience performing roadway maintenance or construction activities.
