This position is eligible for VDOT’s Employee Referral Bonus Program. Only one person may be entered. Position will perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and heavy manual labor while conducting roadway maintenance activities. Equipment operations include but are not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, tractors and similar equipment. Positions perform emergency roadway operations and must be willing to work outside normal work hours in emergencies. Position will oversee inmate labor crews as needed, and Department of Corrections’ security and firearms training will be provided at VDOT’s expense. Additional vacancies may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date. In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates who have a current CDL. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of roadway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures. Demonstrated experience operating dump trucks and other light/medium/heavy-duty equipment and performing preventive maintenance. Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and programs. Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools. Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
Additional Considerations
Possession of a valid CDL. Experience in roadway maintenance or construction.

A valid driver’s license, approved safety shoes and frequent daily travel are required. Must be able to obtain Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and DOT medical card within 3 months of employment. Must be able to obtain first aid, CPR, flagging and work zone safety certifications within a reasonable period of employment. Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to work in diverse conditions including exposure to weather, animals and/or insects, outdoors and in all seasons. Fingerprint-based criminal history record check, references, work history and DMV driving records will be verified. Selected applicant must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies, inclement weather and heavy traffic conditions. Applicants selected for interview will be required to perform a skills demonstration as part of the interview process. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course to obtain your CDL upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
