The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (SNAP-Ed) Nutrition Educator will primarily be responsible for delivering established SNAP-Ed public education programming to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among families and individuals of all age groups throughout the Long Island SNAP-Ed Region. This position will also assist with marketing efforts for SNAP-Ed programming in collaboration with other nutrition educators in the SNAP-Ed region. Given the geographic location of this position, many of the constituents will be Spanish-speaking individuals, so bilingual skills are required.
Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program is through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the Federal Food and Nutrition Services (FNS).
- Associate degree in Nutrition, Health Education, or Public Health or equivalent. GED/High School Diploma plus one year of transferrable program/functional experience is acceptable.
- Experience relevant to the role of the position.

- Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
- Ability to transport/move supplies and equipment and climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to communicate clearly (speak, read, and write proficiently) in English.
- Ability to communicate clearly (speak, read, and write proficiently) in Spanish.
- Ability to present effective educational lessons to target audiences and work with diverse audiences of all ages.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer and word processing skills.
- Familiarity with the community where the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.
- Familiarity with purchasing and preparing foods.
- Familiarity with reviewing and following recipes and ensuring compliance with federal and state guidelines.
- Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.
- Deliver high-quality programming to individuals and groups utilizing approved SNAP-Ed curricula and existing SNAP-Ed program materials and resources.
- Under the direction and oversight of the supervisor, adapt lesson plans and materials as needed to meet established program objectives.
- Assist with implementing environmental program initiatives, such as community and school gardens.
- Assist in multi-association team efforts to deliver the SNAP-Ed Program.
- Represent CCE before the public, participants, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities professionally as part of program delivery.
- Implement lesson plans in the region with multicultural needs using current and approved curricula and supplemental materials, and tailor appropriate programming based on identified participant needs in English and Spanish, as applicable. - Interact with program participants, advisory committees, Cornell program specialists and faculty, and county and community leaders to assist in obtaining evaluation data for programs.
- Assist in communication of evaluation results and findings.
- Make recommendations for improvement/changes to strengthen and improve programmatic offerings.
Coordination/Operation – 15%
- Utilize existing program materials to recruit the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the SNAP-Ed Program.
- Organize and coordinate SNAP-Ed program activities (i.e., food demonstrations, direct lessons to adults and youth, etc.) to support the delivery of established program goals.
- Submit accurate program-related expense receipts and mileage reports promptly.
- Assist supervisor in identified administrative aspects of the SNAP-Ed Program, including, but not limited to, preparing correspondence, maintaining files, maintaining participant records, etc., and ensuring the confidentiality of all information.
- Transport program materials and resources necessary for performing position responsibilities.
- Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations, and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
- Assist in providing marketing materials in promoting SNAP-Ed programming efforts to include, but are not limited to, print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts, and the environmental change initiative in collaboration with other nutrition educators.
- Complete reports, as requested.
- Accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.
- Assist in providing existing information to bring awareness to the public in impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports, etc.
- In cooperation with Supervisor or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
- Collaborate in activities in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.
- Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

- Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
