Job Duties
At VDOT, we are driven by service, safety, innovation and commitment. We’re seeking highly skilled construction workers with a drive to improve and maintain infrastructure to join our Dinwiddie Bridge Crew. As an Operator Structure and Bridge, you will:
Participate as working crew member to complete project to accomplish objectives. Perform heavy manual labor and other tasks to assist in accomplishing construction, repair, and maintenance of timber, steel, and concrete bridge elements and structures.
Operator light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction related work tasks.
Perform a combination of skilled tasks to include carpentry, welding, and concrete finishing.
Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Provide traffic control.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12-month tenure agreement is required.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety.
Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, and hand and power tools.
Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
Ability to work well individually and as a team member.
Ability to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic and under other adverse conditions.
Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Additional Considerations
Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, and concrete placement and finishing.
Experience with light to medium duty equipment and hand and power tools.
Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
Experience setting up work zones desired.
Valid Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements.
A combination of training, experience, or education in Construction or related field desired.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
