Are you able to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/attachments) and perform manual labor? The Fredericksburg District – Northern Neck Residency is seeking individuals interested in joining our highway maintenance team. This posting will serve to fill vacancies throughout King George, Westmoreland, Richmond, Northumberland, and Lancaster counties.
As a maintenance operator, you will:
Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
Attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
Participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
NOTE: This position requires approved safety shoes. Preference will be given to current CDL carriers. A two-week training may be held outside of the Northern Neck Residency counties. Employees will need to be able to report to the training location (up to 1.5 hours away) for the entire training. Reimbursement for travel during training will be provided.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures
Ability to perform heavy manual labor
Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment
Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
Ability to perform safe/skilled operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair
Additional Considerations
Experience in roadway maintenance and construction
Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements
Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up
Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date.
