H1B Approved: Your Complete 2026 Post-Approval Checklist

Congratulations β€” your H1B was approved. Here is everything to do next.

**Immediate (first week):** 1. Read your I-797 approval notice carefully β€” check validity dates, employer name, and job title for any errors 2. Share a copy with your employer's HR and payroll 3. Update your records β€” keep the original I-797 safe (multiple certified copies recommended) 4. If premium processed: confirm your start date with employer

**If you are currently outside the US:** You must obtain a visa stamp at a US consulate before entering the US on H1B status. Gather: valid passport, I-797 approval notice, I-129 petition copy, DS-160 confirmation, visa fee receipt (MRV fee), employer support letter, pay stubs from current employer, educational credentials.

**If you are already in the US on OPT/other status:** Your status automatically converts to H1B on the effective date (October 1 for cap-subject cases). No additional action needed for the conversion itself.

**Travel after H1B approval:** You can travel internationally and re-enter on H1B. You need a valid H1B visa stamp in your passport (or visa waiver program if applicable). If your old visa stamp is still valid for the same employer, you may be able to use it. When in doubt, get a new H1B visa stamp.

**Social Security and ID:** If your Social Security card says 'VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION,' it remains valid for H1B. Your driver's license may need to be renewed to show H1B status β€” bring your I-797 to the DMV.

**Green card planning:** If you plan to pursue a green card, have your employer start PERM as soon as possible β€” your priority date starts with PERM filing, and the sooner you file, the sooner your clock starts.
